As a large group practice, we are happy to include a resident in our mix. We have 9 full time practices and there are 4 physicians who act as preceptors to residents. While in Powell River you will have two preceptors, each who try to involve residents in interesting medical cases. Residents will benefit from the organization and learning opportunity offered by working with a functional EMR. We have a procedures room for minor surgeries. We work with a chronic disease nurse in our practice. Residents will be given an independent office and through the course of their stay will be seeing and treating patients independently. Each case, however, will be discussed at brief meetings at lunch and at the end of the day to allow the exchange of ideas and approaches. Preceptors are available at all times for discussion as needed.
We schedule residents for one shift per week in the ER. Our emergency is a rural emergency with manageable volumes. We are not a centre that gets a lot of trauma but because of an older population will see some interesting cardiovascular medicine and general emergency visits. We have 4 GP anesthetists on call at all times, 24 hour Internal Medicine, Surgery and OBGYN coverage and part time psychiatry and radiology services. We schedule residents for one weekend on call per month for clinic patients in the hospital. This usually comprises of rounds in the morning for 3 hours and then phone response from nursing homes and the hospital.
While in Powell River residents often choose to spend a day with Sports Medicine or the Obstetrician. If you would like exposure to stress testing, physiotherapy, diabetes education center or other disciplines, this can be arranged. Overall, we do our best to expose residents to situations that will maximize learning. To ensure this we do meet with residents at the beginning, midway and at the end of the rotation to give and receive feedback.
